1. David was the youngest of Jesse's eight sons (v.12-14). When the prophet Samuel invited Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice in 1 Samuel 16:6-13, Jesse did not even include David; his "smallest" son was tending the sheep. Read 1 Cor. 1:27-29 and consider why God chose to anoint David?
2. David was a Shepherd in "a dry and weary land where there is no water." What lessons did David learn as a Shepherd that prepared him to face Goliath? (Ps. 23) Many of Israel's great leaders were shepherds (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, his 12 sons, Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah). Why would God choose shepherds to lead His people? (Ps. 78:70-72) 3. David walked 15 miles from Bethlehem to Azekah on a humble errand in obedience to his Dad's request to bring 10 loaves of bread and 10 cheeses. David was faithful in the small things and this made him fit to be ruler over many things. What lessons can we learn from him about humble leadership? 4. Saul listened to Goliath defy His God 80 times!! (v.16) David could only stand to hear Goliath’s defiance once because he was zealous for God’s honor! Are we zealous for the Lord or are we cowards like Saul? 5. David faced 3 giants that day. Goliath, Eliab and Saul all tried to discourage him from the task. How is it that David did not fall into the "Goliath-phobia" that seemed to plague everyone else? How easily do we let people or circumstances discourage us? 6. David's motivation to fight Goliath was "so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." His courage, his boast, his entire dependence was in the LORD. What's our boast and motivation to face the giants in our lives? 7. David crushed Goliath's head with a stone and he fell face down in the dust like a serpent. Goliath’s head was brought back to Jerusalem (v.54), “the city where one of David’s descendants would many centuries later win a great victory at Golgotha, the place of the skull.” (Peter Leithart) In what ways did David’s victory that day foreshadow the triumphs of the Son of David? 8. Reflect on a few similarities between David and Jesus:
